Who am I? Most of us wrestle with this question at some point in life. Most of us answer it in terms of worldly identity―what we have done, and what other people think of us. Nouwen did not. Nouwen answered the question in the only complete way possible. He answered it in spiritual terms.
The words on these pages are a brief glimpse at Henri Nouwen’s lifelong endeavor to convince each of us that we are God’s beloved children.
Nouwen was always inviting people to join him on his pilgrimage. He explained that through our brokenness, pain, and uncertainty, we find our way back to God’s love. Now, I invite you to step into that journey. I hope you discover that, no matter what struggles you face, there is one truth that you should never forget: You are the son or daughter of a great king. He is your father and your God. The world may praise you or criticize you. It matters not. He is with you, always at your side, guiding and protecting you. Do not fear because you are his.

About the Author

HENRI NOUWEN is one of the most popular Christian writers of the 20th century. Born on January 24th, 1932, in Nijkerk, Holland, Nouwen became a diocesan priest in 1957 while studying psychology. Nouwen wrote his first book, Intimacy, in 1969 and continued to write & publish books across the world exploring many spiritual themes—his central theme being how to embrace your spiritual identity as a child of God.

Nouwen moved to the United States in 1964 and taught for two decades at the University of Notre Dame, Yale Divinity School, and Harvard Divinity School. Then in 1980, Nouwen was inspired to live with the poor in Peru, and in 1985 he joined a L’Arche community in France and Canada serving those with developmental disabilities. He died on September 21st, 1996, leaving behind 39 books and an international legacy of compassion and care.

MATTHEW KELLY was born in Sydney, Australia. He has dedicated his life to helping people and organizations become the-best-version-of-themselves. Kelly is a New York Times bestselling author, an internationally acclaimed speaker, and a business consultant to some of the world’s largest and most admired companies. He is the author of more than twenty books, which have sold more than forty million copies and have been published in more than thirty languages.

CAMERON SMITH the illustrator of this cover has loved to paint for as long as he can remember. He graduated from the NCSU School of Design in 1994. Cameron focuses primarily on oil paintings and purses with unwavering passion and hunger to learn more. He is quoted saying, “The more I paint and search for beauty, the more I find the beauty all around. It is an honest beauty, not so polished. I find a sense of peace in it.” Art is known as Cameron’s second love, his first being a husband and father—which he draws from for motivation and inspiration. The core of Cameron is his faith, this is what has kept him committed to painting even in times of financial uncertainty or impracticality. Cameron views the process of his art as an interaction with the Holy Spirit, and his subjects are those that tap into something deep within and allow him to reflect the beauty of creation or the human condition.
